91st Academy Awards: Review of Best Picture

With the 91st annual Academy Awards ceremony happening this Sunday February 24th, we decided to review the Best picture nominees. Scroll down to see our opinions, and let us know what you think in the comments!

Based on a true story, “Green Book” follows Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a Jamaican- American pianist and his Caucasian chauffeur Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) as they are travelling for a concert tour through a deeply segregated area in South America in the 60s. During their travels, they are given a green book, which recommends safe places for African-Americans to travel in South America, and they film follows their adventure.

Bradley Cooper takes on double the task as a director and actor in his directorial debut, “A Star is Born.” The film tells the story of Jack (Bradley Cooper), a musician who falls in love with Ally (Lady Gaga). Ally is a struggling artist who has lost sight of her dream and does not believe in her singing talent anymore. However, motivated by his love for her and his confidence that she could be a prodigious singer, Jack helps Ally grow her self-confidence and pursue her dream. Both actors are also nominated for Best Actor and Actress.

In “BlacKkKlansman”, director Spike Lee tells the true story of the risky undercover investigations led by Ron Stallworth (John David Washington). Stallworth is an African-American police detective with the mission to infiltrate and become a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Along with Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), they start a plan to take down the extremist group.

In “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Rami Malek stars as Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen. This biopic takes us through the journey of a tortured but brilliant artist and dramatizes how Queen became one of the most famous music band of all time.

“Vice” tells the story of Dick Cheney (Christian Bale), the CEO of Halliburton Co, who alongside George W Bush (Sam Rockwell), slowly becomes one of the most powerful and dangerous vice president the United States has seen.

T’Challa (Chaswick Boseman), aka Black Panther, returns to the hidden African nations of Wakanda after the death of his father to claim his rightful place as King in "Black Panther." However, T’Challa must face dangerous enemies who will put the faith of Wakanda and the world between his hands.

"Roma", an autobiography directed by Aflonzo Cuaron, narrates a series of events in the life of a middle-class family in Mexico. The story focuses mainly on Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a young maid, who shares a special bond with the children of the family.

During the early 18th century, when England was at war with France, Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) commanded the throne and governed the country. "The Favorite" is a historical period drama directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. When the new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) commences her duties, Abigail starts to grow a friendship with one of the queen’s closest friends, Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz). Abigail immediately sees an opportunity to reconnect with her lost aristocratic heritage and chaos ensues.
